Freestyle Dancing

Picture
Do you want to dance "freestyle" but aren't quite sure what to do? You're in the right place! Groovy Dancer is the ONLY studio in Seattle teaching this type of dancing!

Everyone who wants to dance has different reasons. Some want to improve their dating life, and some want to overcome being shy. Many just want to get comfortable enough to get out onto the floor and have some fun. Some know how to dance more structured dances but have no idea how to just let it go and dance solo. Each private lesson is tailored to your needs, so each lesson is a little different.

As one student said, this is "not your typical dance lesson." So what is it? Freestyle/nightclub dancing is simply dancing that doesn’t fit into one of the more structured styles, like Salsa, Swing or other formalized dances. It's even less structured than hip hop. You see freestyle dancing at

  • nightclubs
  • wedding receptions
  • school dances (e.g., High School prom or Homecoming)
  • holiday parties
  • cruise ship dance floors
Though it is largely unstructured, there are some basic principles that will make you a better freestyle dancer, whether you are dancing on your own or with a partner.

Both private lessons and group classes focus on building confidence, making you feel comfortable on the dance floor, and making dancing fun. Group classes are taught at multiple levels simultaneously (both basic movements and more advanced variations are demonstrated). Classes are particularly good for absolute beginners and people with "two left feet"!

In a typical class or private lesson, you will learn how to

  • Isolate body parts and move your body with control and precision
  • Build isolated movements into general dance moves
  • Create your own dance moves and style
Depending on your preferences, you can learn how to

  • dance to both fast and slow music
  • dance without a partner and dance with a partner
You can also learn
  • musicality (matching your movements to the music)
  • separate styling for men and for women
  • blending in vs. standing out (hopefully in a good way!)
  • how to get into the "mood" to dance
  • how your attitude affects how your dance movements feel and look
  • how to ask someone to dance
You won’t be learning choreographed dance sequences, but rather fundamental skills and principles that will allow you to dance and move in a way that is natural and comfortable for you, and which is also visually appealing to others.

The Result:

  • Feel more confident about your movement
  • Feel more comfortable on a dance floor
  • Have more FUN!!!
